Preparing for Surgery & Recovery
Your recovery is just as important as the procedure itself. This guide covers evidence-based strategies our surgeons recommend to support healing, minimize complications, and achieve the best possible results — before and after cosmetic surgery at Augusta Plastic Surgery.
Before Surgery: Preparation
Recovery starts before surgery. Stop smoking and all nicotine as early as possible — we recommend 4-6 weeks before your procedure and require a minimum of 2 weeks nicotine-free — nicotine significantly impairs wound healing and is the single biggest controllable risk factor in plastic surgery. Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil) for two weeks prior, unless your prescribing doctor advises otherwise.
- Stock your recovery space: comfortable pillows or a wedge, easy-to-prepare meals, and prescriptions filled in advance
- Arrange a caregiver for at least the first 24-48 hours (longer for tummy tuck or mommy makeover)
- Set up childcare if you have young children — lifting restrictions are strict after most procedures
- Complete any pre-operative labs or clearances your surgeon requests, and keep blood pressure well-controlled
The First 72 Hours
The first three days are typically the most uncomfortable. Follow your pain management protocol — staying ahead of pain is easier than catching up. Keep your head (or torso, for body procedures) elevated, stay hydrated, and eat light, nutritious meals. Begin gentle walking as soon as your surgeon clears you: movement promotes circulation and is your best protection against blood clots.
Weeks 1-4
Follow compression garment instructions exactly — they reduce swelling and help your new contours form. Attend every follow-up appointment even if you feel fine. Avoid bending, lifting, and straining. Protect incisions from sun exposure. Call us right away about increasing pain, fever, unusual swelling, or foul-smelling drainage — (706) 724-5611.
Long-Term Recovery
Final results from most procedures take 6-12 months as swelling resolves and tissues settle. Maintain a stable weight, protect scars with SPF for a full year, and begin scar care (silicone strips or gel) once incisions are fully closed — usually at 3-6 weeks. Patience is part of the process; most patients look better every week for months.
