What is recovery like after a chemical peel?
Recovery depends entirely on peel depth. Superficial peels need almost no downtime, while deeper peels require careful healing.
Superficial Peel
- Mild redness like a light sunburn for a day
- Slight dryness or flaking days 1-5
- No downtime — makeup can be worn the same or next day
Medium Peel (TCA)
- Days 0-2: redness and swelling; skin feels tight and may darken
- Days 3-8: heavy peeling — skin sheds in sheets. Do NOT pull or pick; keep well moisturized
- Days 8-14: peeling completes; new pink skin revealed; mineral makeup okay
- Plan for 5-10 days of visible peeling
Universal Rules
- SPF 30+ is essential during and after healing
- Never pick or peel flaking skin — let it shed naturally
- Avoid active ingredients (retinol, AHAs, vitamin C) until fully healed
- Schedule peels during fall/winter when sun exposure is naturally lower
