What is facelift recovery like week by week?
Facelift recovery requires patience and careful adherence to post-operative instructions. The results are long-lasting, but the initial healing period demands commitment.
Days 1-3: Immediate Post-Op
A compressive head wrap minimizes swelling. Drains may be placed behind the ears and removed at day 1-2. Discomfort is typically tightness and pressure rather than severe pain.
- Significant swelling and bruising around jawline, neck, and ears
- Numbness in cheeks and neck is normal and expected
- Keep head elevated at all times; avoid bending over
Week 1: First Follow-Up
Sutures behind ears may be removed or begin dissolving. Swelling peaks at days 3-4 then decreases. Most patients look presentable with concealer by day 10-14.
Weeks 2-3: Social Recovery
Most visible bruising resolves. Many patients return to non-strenuous work.
Weeks 4-6: Return to Activity
Light exercise resumes at week 4; full activity at week 6. Expect tingling and tightness as nerves regenerate.
Months 2-12: Final Results
Results improve weekly as deep swelling resolves. Scars fade and hide along natural ear creases and hairline. Control blood pressure diligently — it’s the #1 cause of hematoma — and protect scars from sun for 6-12 months. You’ll look better every week for months.
